Dublin, Ireland
June 12-15
The Dallas Diablos will be making its 3rd appearance in the Mark Bingham Memorial Cup Tournament (Bingham Cup) to be held in Dublin, Ireland. The tournament is sanctioned by the International Gay Rugby Association and Board (IGRAB) and hosted in 2008 by the Emerald Warriors RFC. The tournament is named in honor of Mark Bingham, the gay rugby player who is believed to be one of the people who help bring down Flight 93 into a Pennsylvania farm field on 9/11. He and others protected countless other people who may have suffered in the terrorist attack that day.
IGRAB member clubs from around the world will participate in what has become the second largest biennial amateur fifteens rugby union tournament in the world. The tournament will be held at the Dublin City University with its state of the arts sports facilities. Endorsed by the Irish Rugby Football Union, the tournament has picked up a title sponsor, Paddy Power and his online betting site paddypower.com. The Dallas Diablos made their first Bingham Cup appearance in 2004 when it was held in London, England. It was there that we picked up a big fan in Alice Hoagland, Mark Bingham's mom. "Y'all were really tearing it up out there!" In 2006, the tournament was hosted by Gotham Knights RFC in New York City. There were 21 clubs fielding 28 sides for 3 days of competitive play. The Dallas Diablos went into the Bowl division finals undefeated. After a scoreless match play and 2 scoreless overtime, the Boston Ironsides were able to score a penally kick to win.
